il verbo modale should





  
si può usare il verbo modale should per esprimere la propria opinione,per dare un consiglio
o dire quale ,secondo noi,è la cosa giusta da fare,senza volerlo imporre e senza che il non
farlo implichi particolari conseguenze negative . spesso si usa should insieme al verbo think:

    

  • I think the premier should be arrested.(questa è la mia opinione)

  • I think you should eat better if you want to improve your health.(un consiglio secondo la mia opinione)

  • You shouldn't go out this night,the weather is awful (penso sia opportuno tu non vada fuori 
                                                          stanotte perchè ci sarà una tempesta)


  • You are ill.You should go to bed 

  • Sarah suggested that I should look for a new job (il verbo suggested è spesso usato con should)

  • He propose that I should have lunch with him (propose è un altro verbo che si addice bene a should)
possiamo usare should anche quando riteniamo che qualcosa sia sbagliato ,
o per dire che ci aspettiamo qualcosa,o meglio che qualcosa è probabile che succeda:

  • the train should leave early (il treno probabilmente partirà presto-è quello che mi aspetto)

  • She shouldn't be so nervous .(non ha motivo di essere cosi' nervosa ,non è giusto che lo sia)

  • Inter should win easily the match versus Parma (probabilmente l'inter vincerà contro il parma)

  • When you go to Sardinia You should eat porceddu (quando vai in sardegna dovresti mangiare il
                                                     maialetto,te lo raccomando) 

  • Cristina should be at home now (mi aspetto che Cristina sia già arrivata a casa)











in alcuni casi should esprime obbligo,ed indica che ,seppur senza gravi conseguenze ,la cosa da fare 
 
  • we should return the car before the car rental closes (dobbiamo  restituire la macchina prima che
                                                            l'autonoleggio chiuda)


  • we should be at work before 8:30 (dobbiamo iniziare al lavoro prima delle 8 e 30)


come tutti i modali il passato si costruisce  con  : soggetto + should +have +participio passato                                                                                       I        should have gone                  something

il tempo passato si usa per esprimere rimpianto per qualcosa che non abbiamo fatto nel passato,e che 
sarebbe stato opportuno fare :

  • I shouldn't have spoken to the director like this (non avrei dovuto parlare in questo modo al direttore)

  • I should have gone to her wedding party (sarei dovuto andare alla sua festa di matrimonio)





un'altro modo per usare should è la costruzione IF  SHOULD :

    

  • if Tim should sleep ,don't disturb him equivale a dire if tim sleeps,don't disturb him
        con la forma if...should chi parla pensa che la possibilità che Tim dorma è minore
        rispetto alla forma  if Tim sleeps-altro esempio :


  • if Simon should come ,please tell Him that I am ill ---->se Simon dovesse venire (la qual cosa non è molto probabile)
                                                                    digli che sto male

  • if Simone comes,please tell Him that I am ill ---------->se Simon viene digli che sto male





had better

è un'altro modo per espimere  che è consigliable fare una certa cosa,tuttavia si mette in rilievo che inevitabilmente 
,se non si segue la raccomandazione,ci saranno delle conseguenze o dei pericoli. in pratica :
should----->dovresti   had better->faresto meglio

    

  • you should call Mary .   (consiglio,serebbe giusto farlo ed opportuno farlo)

  • You had better call Mary.(se non lo fai probabilmente si offenderà)
un'altra differenza molto importante è che should può essere usato sia per casi specifici che per casi generali,mentre had better può essere usato solo per situazioni specifiche.

      

    • you had better not to talk to me like this in the future!(se ti rivolgerai ancora cosi' in futuro prenderò provvedimenti)

    • you had better to slow down ,there is a big hole in the street (se non rallenti centrerai in pieno la buca)

    • you should slow down when the street is full of holes(in questo caso non possiamo usare had better perchè stiamo 
                                                           parlando in generale)
