Wish può essere usato come verbo normale, col significato di desiderare o augurare, o con delle costruzioni che ne cambiano il significato:

- wish + infinitive
per richieste formali:

esprime il desiderio che la situazione
attuale o futura sia diversa

    per lamentarsi di qualcosa che qualcuno fa insistentemente, esprimere fastidio o insoddisfazione per una azione nel presente in pratica non si e' contenti della situazione attuale , e si desidera che qualcosa succeda o qualcuno faccia qualcosa

    devi proprio continuare a fumare?

    magari qualcuno mi regalasse un motorino

    come sopra ,magari non stesse piovendo, ma con impazienza,perche' probabilmente mi impedisce di fare qualcosa , o mi crea qualche inconveniente

    bisogna stare attenti a non usare wish + would per le situazioni, ma solo per azioni o cambiamenti
  • I wish you were here
    (non I wish you would be here)

    inoltre per esprimere che che qualcosa succeda in futuro , senza specificare che preferiremo che la situazione fosse diversa da quella che si prospetta, e senza il bisogno di specificare fastidio, si deve usare il verbo hope :
