-forma affermativa :
soggetto + had been + ing form .
esempio : he had been working .

-forma interrogativa :
had + soggetto + been + ing form .
esempio : had he been working ?

-forma negativa :
soggetto + had not been + ing form .
esempio : he hadn't been working .

past perfect continuous quando si usa

Il past perfect continuous si usa prevalentemente per tre finalita' :
1) durata prima di qualcosa nel passato
2) causa di qualcosa nel passato .
3)con il condizionale del terzo tipo

1)durata prima di qualcosa nel passato

usiamo il past perfect continuous per mostrare che qualcosa e' iniziato nel passato e continua fino ad un altro momento nel passato.
for six minutes (per cinque minuti),
e for five weeks (per cinque settimane), sono entrambe durate che possono essere usate col past perfect continuous.

Da notare che si usa allo stesso modo del present perfect continuous, con la differenza che la durata non continua fino a questo momento, ma si interrompe prima di qualcos'altro nel passato.

we had been playing for over 2 hours before Lila arrived.
Stavamo giocando da oltre 2 ore prima che Lila arrivasse.

he had been working at the company for five years when it failed.
stava lavorando in azienda da 5 anni prima che l'azienda falli'.

how long had you been watching tv before you did your homework?
per quanto tempo hai guardato la tv prima di fare i tuoi compiti

lisa had been teaching at the school for more than two years before he left for europe.
lisa stava insegnando alla scuola per piu' di due anni prima di partire per l'europa.

past perfect continuous : for e since

for : per una lunghezza di tempo
since : da un punto nel tempo

We apologised because we had kept them waiting for 3 hours.
noi ci scusammo perche' gli abbiamo fatti aspettare per 3 ore

We apologised because we had kept them waiting since 8:00 .
ci scusammo perch' gli abbiamo tenuti ad aspettare dalle 8 in punto.

2) causa di qualcosa nel passato

possiamo usare il past perfect continuous prima di un'altra azione nel passato , al fine di mostrare causa ed effetto :
esempi:
james was tired because he had been running.
james era stanco perche' stava correndo

luca got fat because he had been eating too much
luca ingrasso' perche' stava mangiando troppo

milly failed the last exam because she had not been going to school.
milly non supero' l'ultimo esame perche' non stava andando a scuola.

3)possiamo usare il past perfect continuous anche per il condizionale del terzo tipo o per il discorso indiretto :

If it hadn't been raining, we would have gone to the park.
se non stava piovendo ,saremmo andati al parco.

past perfect continuous esempi

riepilogo

il past perfect continuous inglese si usa quando si sta' parlando di qualcosa successo nel passato e ci si vuole riferire a qualcosa accaduto subito prima,e che e' durato per un tot di tempo, e il risultato dell'accaduto e' ancora visibile ed attinente nel momento (ovviamente del passato) di cui si sta' parlando

although I had been working for 10 hours, the work was not completed by the estiblished time
sebbene stessi lavorando da dieci ore il lavoro non era finito entro il tempo stabilito

in altre parole il past perfect progressive e' usato per indicare una azione continua in corso nel passato che e' stata interrotta da una seconda azione espressa col passato semplice (simple past); quello che e' veramente importante e' la durata dell' azione espressa tramite il past perfect continuous

she had been thinking to him before he called
lei stava a pensando a lui prima che lui la chiamasse

possiamo anche dire che il past perfect contiuous è come il past perfect con la differenza che esprime azioni più lunghe nel passato prima di un'altra azione nel passato :
When I arrived, george had been waiting for five hours.
Pat was very tired. She had been working.

analogamente al presente progressive ,non sempre possiamo usare la ing form con gli stative verbs ,ovvero quei verbi che mostrano uno stato e non una azione .
gli stative verbs si possono dividere nelle seguenti categorie :
1)verbi che descrivono pensieri opinioni o intenzioni : believe , understand , know
2)verbi che esprimono possesso : have
3)verbi che esprimono percezione : see , smell ,ear
4)verbi che esprimono emozioni : love , need ,hate

She had only been waiting there for five minutes when they arrived.
lei stava aspettando li solo per cinque minuti quando essi arrivarono.

Had she only been waiting there for five minutes when they arrived?
stava aspettando li da soli cinque minuti quando voi siete arrivati?

she hadn't been waiting there for five minutes when they arrived.
lei non stava aspettando li da cinque minuti quando essi arrivarono.

I was exhausted because I had been staying awake too late.
era stremata perche' stavo sveglia troppo a lungo.

How long had he been waiting?
da quanto tempo stanno aspettando?

How long had she been waiting for the bus to come?
da quanto tempo stava aspettando che arrivasse l'autobus?

How many year had she been studying to be a teacher?
quanti anni stava studiando per diventare insegnante?
