certe volte dobbiamo decidere se usare il verbo all'infinito o nella ing form:

dopo certi verbi possiamo usare la ing form oppure l'infinito,ma il significato cambia :

go on

-I went on kooking while she was with me (go + ing = continuare a fare la stessa cosa)
-after discussing the economy,the president then went on to talk about foreign policy (go on + to=continuare dicendo o facendo qualcosa di nuovo)



to try

-I tried to sleep last night but I couldn't.(fare un tentativo o uno sforzo)
- did youtry counting the sheep? (fare un esperimento ,un test o dare un suggerimento)


to forget

-she forgot to tell me our plans(non mi ha detto i suoi piani ma avrebbe dovuto dirmelo)
-she forgot telling me our plans(mi ha detto i suoi piani ma si è dimenticata di avermeli detti)


to remember

-I must remember to send the Christmas cards (devo ricordare di fare qualcosa ,primadi farlo)
-I remember seeing him for the first time (ricordo di averlo visto,dopo averlo visto)


to regret

-I regret to inform you that we have run out of goods(usato per dare cattive notizie in modo educato)
-I regret throwing that old umbrella away (in tutti gli altri casi,normalmente regret è seguito dalla ing form)


to help

- I helped him (to) repair his roof (help può essere seguito indifferentemente dall'infinito con o senza to)
-sorry,I know it's rude,but I can't help laughing (questo è l'unico caso in cui help è seguito dalla ing form,ed è una espressione idiomatica che significa non posso trattenermi dal farlo,in questo cao quindi si traduce :so che è sgarbato,ma non posso trattenermi dal ridere)


to mean

-I mean to make some important changes in my life (mostrare intenzione)
-this mean working all night (mostrare conseguenze negative+ involve (implicare comportare))


to consider

-many critics consider his work to be excellent (ritenere qualcuno o qualcosa)
-I'm considering buying many new clothes when sales are on (valutare ,pensare di fare qualcosa)


to need

-you need to practise your spoken english more.(attiva)
-your hair needs cutting(passiva)


altri esempi di verbi seguiti dal gerundio e dall'infinito

venire insieme è un inizio.continuare a stare insieme è progresso. lavorare insieme è un successo.
in questo caso tutti i verbi usati all'infinito sono il soggetto della frase.

se vuoi costruire una nave ,non cercare gente da riunire per raccogliere legna e non assegnare loro compiti e lavoro,

in questo caso vediamo che dopo il verbo want usiamo il verbo build all'infinito.

in questo caso il verbo live  è usato dopo la preposizione of .benchè in inglese si usi il gerundio,in italiano si traduce con l'infinito.

(in questo caso try è usato nel senso di fare un tentativo o uno sforzo,quindi il verbo che segue è infinito)

posso promettere di essere franco,non posso promettere di essere imparziale.
in inglese dopo il verbo promise si usa sempre l'infinito .

dopo il verbo star segue il gerundio.

dopo l'aggettivo better segue il verbo all'infinito.
